Relevant Experience

Residency Project November // C.V.

Throughout November I looked for images in the FARR collection that reminded me of my various work experiences. I reproduced them & wrote some prose including the cover letters (see older posts). Each image is footnoted. I apologize to all the original artists for appropriating their work but my drawings are meant to be references, and are meant to steer people to these books. (yeah! these ones in the picture below.)

Autobiography of a C.V.

Residency Project November // C.V.

Entries

Gymnastics Coach, 1999-2000

We taught children, ages 3-10, how to flip around in various ways, and maybe more importantly, how to fall down.

Gift Shop Sales, 2000-‘01

I had a talent for creating displays combining cherub shaped candles, fancy garlic presses, cherub shaped soap, oven mitts that said things like “hot tamales” on them, ceramic cherubs, fake fruits, garden stones shaped like cherubs, etc.

Clothing Retail, 2002-‘03

It was expected that whenever a customer tried on jeans we would wait outside the change room and then as soon as they emerged, we would bend down and fold the legs of the jeans up to the length of a proper hem. This startled most people but it was strict store policy.

How to write a cover letter

Residency Project November // C.V.

Hey, it's me, your November FARR resident:

If you were like, "what's your project about?"

I'd be all like, "the CV is a kind of autobiographical archive that I struggle to make sense of. It has to be revised for different opportunities; jobs and experiences are omitted or embellished or lost in revisions. I would like to make sense of this record, and of how I have managed to keep buying the pens I like, the books I carry around, the food I need to eat, and the rent I am supposed to pay."

By which I mean, I am going to create an illustrated version of C.V. with footnotes. The books I use as sources for my illustrations all live in the FARR. Come on over already, wouldya?

Well October, and my residency at the FARR has come to a close.  It's been a wonderful adventure, and I can't wait to share the work I have created with you at my artist talk and workshop later this winter.

I have also been working on a zine detailing the research I have done, and what I have learned about how to build your own philosophical toys.  You'll be able to pick up a copy shortly at the Fine Arts Reading Room.

Thank you for reading, and checking out my work, and a huge thanks to the FARR community for the support.

With love & illusion,

bekky O'Neil
